Highest Grossing Films of 2018

2018 was a successful year at the box office as many moviegoers came out in droves to see the latest and greatest movies. It was a year for superhero movies, but if you weren’t a fan, don’t worry. Whether you prefer comedy, action, or family movies, there was a 2018 movie for everyone. Do you know which movies brought home the most money?

  • In the second installment of the Fantastic Beast prequels, Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) has escaped from prison and is seeking out followers to assist with his plan to start a superiority movement against the muggles. In an attempt to stop this sinister plan, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) recruits the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne).

Despite negative critical response and mixed audience reception, Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald earned an estimated $652 million worldwide, a $400 million profit over its $200 million budget. The success of Crimes of Grindelwald comes down to the strength of the Harry Potter franchise, which continues to bring in fans due to the depths of its wizarding world.

  • Full of raunchy humor and tons of action, Deadpool 2 looks to up insanity in places its predecessor would never go. To boil down the film to its most basic level, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) meets an orphan kid named Russell (Julian Dennison). Cable (Josh Brolin), a mutant from the future, travels to the present to assassinate Russell for crimes that he has yet to commit. In order to protect Russell, Deadpool must team up with the X-Men in order to defeat the genetically advanced Cable.

Deadpool 2 earned back its reported budget of $110 million and then some as it earned around $785 million worldwide. Much like the first film, Deadpool 2’s overwhelming success is thanks to the R-rated, fourth-wall breaking humor, which is faithfully adapted from the comics.

  • After a mission goes wrong, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team are blamed for the escape of anarchist Solomon Lane (Sean Harris). In an attempt to salvage their mission and capture Solomon Lane, Ethan and company have to outsmart the CIA. Unfortunately for Ethan, there’s a mole on his team.

Hailed as some of the best action movies to hit the big screens, the Mission Impossible films have always been very successful. Mission Impossible: Fallout continued the tradition by bringing in a total of $791 million.

  • Bohemian Rhapsody is a dramatic retelling of Queen’s rise to fame. More specifically, the film focuses on Freddie Mercury’s life from the formation of the band to their iconic performance at Live Aid.

Despite having a reported budget of $50 to 55 million, Bohemian Rhapsody easily earned a profit by bringing in a whopping $844.7 million at the box office. While the worldwide success and popularity of Queen’s music was certainly a factor in the film’s success, don’t discount Rami Malek’s uncanny performance as Mercury.

Sing-along versions of the film are also available, which gives fans the ultimate experience of feeling like they’re at a live Queen concert with Freddie Mercury himself.

  • In Venom, Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) comes into contact with an alien symbiote that merges with Eddie’s body to create the titular “Venom.” While Eddie and the alien try to figure out how to work as one being, they are being hunted by an organization that wants the symbiote for themselves.

Although the initial reactions to Venom were negative, the film went on to earn $852 million, easily surpassing its $116 million budget. Considering Venom is one of Spider-Man’s most beloved foes, fans flocked to see if Sony could do right by the iconic character. Plus, they hoped it would make them forget Topher Grace’s reviled portrayal of Venom.

  • Set after the events of 2017’s Justice League, Aquaman follows the story of Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), a half human, half Atlantean, fighting for peace amongst both humans and Atlanteans. The kingdom of Atlantis, which is currently being ruled by his half-brother King Orm (Patrick Wilson), gathers an army with plans to conquer the surface. With the assistance of the royal counselor Vulko (Willem Dafoe), Arthur must seek out the legendary Trident of Atlan to take his rightful place as the king and become the protector of the Atlantean people.

Aquaman had a reported budget of $160 to 200 million and worldwide grossed a total of $1.1 billion. The film’s success is heavily related to the intense action scenes and the vibrant and colorful fantasy-like world of Atlantis — which juxtaposed the majority of the DCEU’s offerings. Not to mention Jason Momoa is very easy on the eyes.

  • When the credits rolled on the first The Incredibles in 2004, moviegoers begged for a sequel to the Parr family’s adventures in superheroing. Hopefully, they were patient since it took 14 years for Pixar to get around to a sequel. Following immediately after the first film, The Incredibles 2 sees a shift in the Parr family dynamic as Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) becomes the breadwinner of the family while Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) adapts to being a stay-at-home dad.

After such a long wait, it was no wonder that The Incredibles 2 would be so successful. Even with a budget of $200 million, the movie would earn nearly $1.24 billion worldwide. Plus, the PG rating and lower barrier of entry for a superhero movie — one movie vs. hundreds of comics of tertiary info — made it far more approachable to anybody, no matter their age.

  • Years after the destruction of the Jurassic World theme park, the remaining dinosaurs are at risk of extinction due to a volcano on the verge of erupting. Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) attempt to rescue these remaining dinosaurs but uncover new breeds of dinosaurs that may threaten the entire planet.

The Jurassic Park films have always been quite successful at bringing in large audiences and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was no different. In fact, it brought in the third highest box office of 2018 with an astonishing $1.31 billion worldwide.

  • Following the events of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther centers around T’Challa’s return to the futuristic African nation of Wakanda. Due to the death of his father — the King of Wakanda — in Civil War, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) takes his rightful place upon the throne. However, the new king is faced with a challenge from Wakanda’s dark past and must gather allies to help ensure the safety of the people of Wakanda and the rest of the world.

Released in early 2018, Black Panther was a box office juggernaut for Marvel and Disney — easily squashing its $200 million budget by earning $1.34 billion worldwide. As the first ever African-American lead superhero film, the film’s representation from the main cast to the production staff to the soundtrack was a key part of its success.

  • Ever since his purple face turned to the camera at the end of the first Avengers movie, every movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was building towards one foe, one galactic threat — Thanos. After eight years of build and 10 years of setup, Thanos (Josh Brolin) finally entered the fold in Infinity War to collect the Infinity Stones and bring “balance” to the galaxy. With the fate of the entire universe at stake, the Avengers must unite with new allies to stop the Mad Titan before he collects all six infinity stones.

As the culmination of 10 years of Marvel movies, there was no way Infinity War wouldn’t be 2018’s undisputed champion of the box office — it was the most-anticipated film of the year if not the decade. As such, Infinity War completely demolished its approximately $400 million budget by earning $2.05 billion worldwide.
